What can I store in this COSHH cabinet?

It’s designed for hazardous substances other than flammable liquids, such as cleaning chemicals, irritants and harmful maintenance products. Always check each product’s Safety Data Sheet and your COSHH risk assessment before storing it, as some substances need to be kept apart. Why does the cabinet have a spill sump?

The 10L welded sump in the base catches liquid from a leaking or damaged container, so it stays inside the cabinet rather than spreading across the floor. The tray lifts out for cleaning, so a spill can be dealt with properly before the cabinet goes back into use. For spills outside the cabinet, keep spill kits close by.

What’s the difference between the yellow and grey cabinets?

Many workplaces use both to keep their storage organised: the yellow flammable COSHH cabinet for flammable liquids such as paints, solvents and thinners, and this grey one for other hazardous substances, such as cleaning chemicals and irritants. Each comes with a hazard sticker, and you can add other signs to suit what you store.

Can I store different chemicals together?

Only if they’re compatible. Substances that react with each other, such as flammables and oxidisers, shouldn’t share a cabinet. Check each Safety Data Sheet and your risk assessment, and use separate cabinets where substances need to be kept apart.

Who decides which hazard sign goes on the cabinet?

You do. Each cabinet comes with a hazard sticker, but the sign should always suit what’s stored inside, so check it before use. You can choose different safety signs and labels to customise the cabinet for its contents.

Your COSHH and fire risk assessments should decide. Keep it away from heat, clear of escape routes and exits, and where it can be reached easily. The cabinet arrives assembled and stands on the floor. If space is tight, a smaller grey COSHH cabinet is also available.

Is this cabinet fire resistant?

No. It’s a lockable steel cabinet with a welded spill sump and hazard marking, for organised, controlled storage. It has no fire rating, so if your fire or DSEAR risk assessment calls for a fire-resisting cabinet, choose a fire-resisting safety cabinet instead.
