Top 5 inventions that have changed the workplace

People across the world take great advantage in the objects and devices we use today, but have you ever thought about what life would be like without them? Your mobile phone, the new Ipad or just some artificial lighting. We have looked into 5 things that have changed how the workplace functions and how life has become easier with these things and have put them into our top 5 inventions (in no particular order!)

1. Computers & The Internet

There is probably a good chance that we wouldn't cope without a computer or computer system in the present day. Through computers, we can communicate with people from across the world via email, social networking or video conferencing. We can also store information and data on computers of filing systems where it will be kept safely and organised - unless the computer decides to break! Before computers or the personal computer was available, the only digital computer system of its kind was a calculator.

The Internet turned the computer into an amazing machine. It is one of the most powerful inventions in the modern day. It allows people to access any information on the web at any time. It has a massive impact on how we work but has also had an impact on business, the economy and entertainment. The Internet is used by billions of people worldwide to either search for pictures of cats or how the world began. Society has became an easy place to live with an answer to any question just a few clicks away, instead of reading a book or asking someone for the answer.

2. Telephone & Mobile Phones

The invention of the telephone and then the mobile phone have made communication incredibly easy. When the telephone was invented in the 1870's, the days of writing letters were swiftly pushed aside and people would be ringing other people to talk. The invention of the phone happened by accident when Alexander Graham Bell and his assistant, Thomas Watson were playing around with two springs connected by a long piece of wire.

3. The Wheel & Cars

The wheel is one of the oldest and most remarkable invention know to man, without it we wouldn't be in the world we are today. Wheels have helped build up the world's economy, industry and technology. This invention led and was part of the Industrial Revolution.

Cars, firstly known as auto mobiles came about in 1769 when the very first self-propelled road vehicle was invented. However, in 1885 a steam-powered model was invented and was the world's first practical auto mobile to be powered by an internal-combustion engine. Cars and other vehicles have helped people travel far and wide to places to go on holiday, to work or to business trips and now, the present day and the future.

4. The Gregorian Calender

You may know this calender as the Western or Christian calender. This calender is the most widely accepted and used civil calender. It was name after Pope Gregory XIII in February 1582. The calender, as you will know, is based on a 365-day year. And as the song goes - 30 days has September, April, June and November. All the rest have 31, except for February which only has 28, but in a leap-year one day more 29. The introduction of the calender allowed for the realignment of the equinox - the tilting of the earth which happens two days of the year. It is when day and night are the same length of time. At a workplace, we follow the calender sacredly, whether it is counting down the days in the week until Friday, marking off the holidays on the calender or needing to remind yourself of what day it is!

5. The Light Bulb

In the times when all you had was natural light to work in, work hours were limited to daylight hours. Light bulbs have changed the world dramatically as we can now work in the dark with no problems - unless there is a power cut! Thomas Edison is the primary inventor because he created a completely functional lighting system.
